Temple University - Tyler School of Art

H2L2 Architects/Planners and Carlos Jimenez Studios teamed as a Joint Venture to design the new Tyler School of Art. The Tyler School, previously located in suburban Philadelphia, relocated to Temple University's main Philadelphia campus to provide a significant anchor in the Temple University ‘Avenue of the Arts’ complex for the performing arts and visual arts. The Tyler School of Art consists of art studios, exhibition spaces for professional and student work, admissions and administrative spaces, and faculty and graduate student offices and studios. Interactive technology classrooms and dedicated critique spaces are also part of the program. The main entrance is through a large atrium space that will be shared by both the Schools of Art and Music. This atrium houses the ‘grand stair’, the main lounge, an ‘events’ room, and a café that overlooks an exterior landscaped courtyard.

The major spaces within this 250,000 square foot facility are organized by an interior ‘street’ that wraps around the courtyard. The courtyard has been designed to accommodate art exhibits, musical performances, individual student work and general recreation. The building itself is distributed over four floors, with the “heavy” studios – the more industrial applications such as Ceramics, Glass, and Sculpture – located on the first floor, and the “lighter” studios – Fibers and Printmaking – on the second floor. The Painting and Drawing studios are located on the third floor, in a loft-like space with plenty of north light. Photography, Wood Shop, General Storage, and the main Mechanical and Electrical Rooms are located on the lower level.
