H2L2 was founded in 1907 as the practice of master architect Paul Phillipe Cret. His successors Harbeson Hough Livingston and Larson continued the practice under their own names until 1976, when the firm's informal name "H2L2" became official. Several generations of partners since have guided the firm, while continuing Cret's legacy of superior design.

Today there are four partners: Barry N. Eiswerth, Mykhaylo S. Kulynych, Thomas P. Piotrowski, and Douglas Steele. This partnership is notable for the diversity of distinct but overlapping interests and experience that each principal brings to the firm. Their varied and complementary strengths all support H2L2's well-established identity as a service-oriented design firm.
