The Shanghai American School commissioned H2L2 to plan and design an extensive expansion to their existing 400-student elementary and middle school located in the Pudong section of Shanghai. H2L2's plan converts the school into a 1,700-student, 53,000 square meter, state-of-the-art pre-K through 12th grade school. The elementary, middle and high school areas of the campus each have their own private, grade-oriented courtyards and playgrounds. At the west end of the complex are located the pool, gymnasium and related support facilities, as well as a second entrance and parking. Athletic fields and recreation spaces are conceived as part of a large, expansive open area, which can be configured to accommodate numerous outdoor activities.
