Delaware State is all about “making our mark on the world,” as its tagline proclaims. So when the university set its aspirations on significantly increasing enrollment on its 400-acre Dover campus, it realized that investments in infrastructure would be needed to accommodate a larger student body. The university commissioned H2L2 to complete a comprehensive master plan, which would provide guidance for growth.
H2L2 began with a blank sheet of paper, undertaking a detailed space-utilization study to assess the current use of facilities, identify space shortages, and determine future needs. From this research came a transformational plan that outlined what the university could become. The recommendations included expansions of academic space, student residences, student life facilities, athletics, and parking. Additionally, H2L2 addressed such campus improvements as lighting, circulation, signage, landscaping, and security.
The recommendations built on the university's existing facilities surpassed current educational standards. The interior of the campus has since been transformed into an exciting environment oriented primarily to pedestrian traffic.
Founded in 1891, Delaware State takes pride in its heritage as one of America's first land-grant and historically black institutions of higher learning that has evolved into a fully accredited and diverse university. Today, it draws students from 38 states and 31 countries - and it continues to set its sights high, drawing direction from H2L2's roadmap for the future.
